This page provides an introduction to McLube’s solvent-based release technology and features several of our solvent-based release options for various industries and applications. For more industry-specific information, browse our release agents by material and specialty application, or contact McLube® for assistance with selecting the ideal coating for your process and materials.

McLube® offers a consummate line of solvent-based release agents for a variety of materials and processes. While generally more hazardous than their water-based equivalents, solvent-based coatings offer faster drying times which can save valuable production time and increase the number of parts molded per shift. Solvent-based coatings also boast excellent wetting characteristics, particularly on ambient temperature molds and may be used during startup before the substrate has reached operating temperature.

Performance

Fast-drying

While effective and generally less hazardous than solvent formulas, water-based release coatings have one major drawback that can significantly impact line efficiency – drying time. Extended drying times can reduce the number of parts produced per shift as operators wait for water-based coatings to dry and may even require purchase of additional equipment, such as air knives, fans, or heat lamps, to facilitate evaporation. If your process cannot accommodate the slower drying times of a water-based coating, or you want to improve the overall efficiency of your line, then consider testing a McLube® Solvent-based Release Agent.

Technology

Water vs. Solvent-based

The first question that needs to be answered when choosing a release agent is whether your process requires a solvent-based or water-based coating. Aside from process requirements like drying time, other factors such as plant safety goals, operator preferences, environmental impact, and industry stigmas may affect your choice of medium. Solvent-based mold releases dry instantly and can improve the overall efficiency of your production line, but they may not be ideally suited to your materials or environmental impact goals.
