McLube’s VOC-free solvent-based release agents offer the same benefits of traditional solvent-based formulas while allowing molders to reduce overall plant emissions. McLube® also offers a variety of water-based mold release agents that are inherently free of volatile organic compounds. Contact McLube® and one of our experienced technical representatives will help you reduce emissions in your process.

Details & Benefits

What are Volatile Organic Compounds?

The Environmental Protection Agency defines volatile organic compounds as any organic chemical compound whose composition makes it possible for it to evaporate under normal indoor atmospheric conditions of temperature and pressure, excluded those that have been determined to have negligible environmental and health effects. The European Union defines VOCs as organic (containing carbon) compounds with an initial boiling point below 482°F (250°C) measured at an atmospheric pressure of 101.3kPa (normal pressure at sea level). The World Health Organization further classifies VOCs into three categories:

1. Very volatile organic compounds (VVOCs)
2. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
3. Semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs)

Many fast-drying solvents contain volatile organic compounds that could pose health concerns without proper safety precautions. VOCs are also outdoor pollutants that contribute to photochemical (oxidation) smog and other environmental concerns. The lower a compound’s boiling point, the higher the risk of indoor and outdoor contamination and the higher the volatility rating. McLube’s line of VOC-free solvent-based release agents and water-based release agents are ideal for eco-conscious molders that want to move away from VOC-containing solvents.
